Overview

  • The Gura River Camp is a family campground on the largest river of the Aberdares.

  • The campground has spaces to put up tents or park cars with rooftop tents. We currently don’t rent out any gear.

  • There are simple facilities consisting of

    • Compost toilets

    • Showers with kuni boosters

    • Kitchen banda (no cookers, cutlery or other equipment yet)

  • Currently we DON’T have power on site and very limited lighting. So please bring charging devices and lamps.

  • Our tap runs water from the river which is very clean but it is not filtered. We recommend you bring a filter or drinking water from Nairobi.

What to do

  • The campground is in the forest reserve managed by Kenya Forest Service, just outside the Aberdares National Park fence. That means there are no wild animals to be concerned about.

  • Visitors can enjoy hiking & mountain biking on the many trails in the area, swimming in the river, BBQing, hiking up into the national park with a ranger. Or just chill and read a book :)

  • You can also fish for trout. However, the trout population around the campsite area is currently very low. We will address that soon by stocking the river). In the meantime the only way to fish is hiking up 4km into the national park with a ranger. Please make sure to bring your own gear.

  • The camp sites are located right on the banks of the river overlooking the beautiful native forest.

Check in / check out

  • If you choose to arrive on Friday, Dec 8th, please don’t arrive before 4pm.

  • Otherwise you can check in and out at your leisure between Dec 9th and 12th.

  • Spots are first-come-first-served. So the earlier you get there, the more options you have to pick from. Just sayin’!

Directions

  • Click on the link to the google pin for the campground.

  • Signal at camp is very limited. You can make phone calls from some spots but mobile internet doesn’t work. So please load your driving directions on your phone before you get close to the camp.

  • The drive is 2 hours and 45 minutes from central Nairobi (google maps will tell you it’s a bit over 3 hours but it’s actually faster than that).

  • It is a very easy drive and all tarmac except for the last 10 minutes.

  • Accessing the campground does NOT require 4wd. As long as you don’t come with a very low clearance vehicle, you’re fine.

Camp fees

  • 2000 KES per adult per night

  • 1000 KES per child per night (>3 years of age)

No cash - Mpesa only. To be paid upon arrival. Details will be shared.
